Team leader K. Yogarajah told the TEHRAN TIMES that the group began their bicycle trip in January with the intention of promoting world peace in South Asia but then decided to expand their itinerary. He said that the team is a diverse mix of all Sri Lanka’s ethnic and religious groups, with Sinhalese, Tamil, Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, and Catholic members. He added that two of the cyclists are women.
They have been distributing handbills promoting world peace and have also given some lectures on peace in schools during their journey.
They began in Sri Lanka, and then traveled to India, Nepal, back to India, Pakistan, and now they are in Iran. They entered Iran from Pakistan in Baluchistan province and then cycled to Tehran. Their next scheduled stop is in the Azerbaijan Republic, and from there they plan to travel to Moscow, Russia and then cycle across Siberia to Mongolia, China, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore. They have not gotten visas yet for Laos but may travel through that country, too, if they get visas.
From Singapore the team will then fly back to Sri Lanka, where they plan to cycle around the island and end their trip in the capital Colombo.
The members of the team are K. Yogarajah, G. M. Upali, R. A. U. P. Alwis, P. Malani, D. Saradnawalli, M. Rizwan, W. J. Prasanna, S. Niranjankuma, H. A. R. N. Randunu, and W. Mahinda.
